Queridos amigos y familia,
aprovechando bien el tiempo, porque los días son malos. Por tanto, no seáis insensatos, sino entendidos de cuál sea la voluntad del Señor. – Efesios 5:16-17
Mientras servimos juntos aquí en el Perú como sus fieles colaboradores para el Señor, nos ocupamos con la obra del Maestro, porque como dice el versículo en Efesios, los días son malos. Este verano ha traído muchas oportunidades y necesidades.
Noticias del ministerio
Campamentos y conferencias: Este verano se ha llenado de actividades y emociones. En enero tuve la oportunidad de predicar en un campamento familiar en Trujillo. Fue una bendición; los campistas respondieron a la predicación y la enseñanza y tomaron muchas decisiones. Además, la última semana de enero y la primera semana de febrero tuvimos nuestros propios campamentos (los primeros en casi 17 años), uno para sordos y otro para oyentes. Qué gran bendición ver a personas sordas y oyentes salvados y cambiados durante estos campamentos. Los que llegaron de otras iglesias dijeron que era el mejor campamento al que han asistido, y esperan con anticipación los campamentos del próximo año.
La semana pasada también celebramos nuestra conferencia de Fuegos de Evangelismo. Este año se realizó en el Seminario Bíblico Bautista en el norte de Lima a unas dos horas de Efata. Qué gran bendición, con más de 40 pastores llegando a los talleres y más de 400 personas asistiendo cada noche. En la invitación la última noche, más de 40 jóvenes y adultos dedicaron sus vidas públicamente al Señor.
Estamos planeando el 40º aniversario de Efata, que se viene del 17 al 21 de mayo. Por favor oren para que sea un gran estímulo para nuestra iglesia y para que muchos sean salvados.
Salvaciones y bautismos: Muchas personas han sido salvadas durante estos últimos meses. El otro domingo bautizamos a varias personas de Efata y de nuestra iglesia misionera en Tablada. Uno era hermano mayor de dos de los pastores en nuestro equipo. Fue el último de los hermanos en ser salvo y bautizado. Fue maravilloso ver a todos los hermanos y hermanas venir a asistir al bautismo. Estaban tan emocionados. Fue grandioso ver a los nuevos conversos y a otros cristianos responder a la orden del Señor para el bautismo.
Ministerio del hogar: Seguimos recibiendo un flujo constante de bebés y niños que pasan por Efata en camino a sus orfanatos. Ayudamos como hogar transitorio para estos niños abandonados o rescatados de situaciones abusivas. La mayoría son bebés o niños pequeños, pero ocasionalmente recibimos a un niño mayor, y muchos de esos han sido salvos a través de este ministerio. Uno de esos era una niña de once años que vino y se quedó con nosotros por sólo una noche. ¡Tal vez nunca la volvamos a ver este lado del cielo, pero la veremos allí!
Infraestructura: Recientemente la ciudad pavimentó nuestras calles y puso veredas. Hemos estado esperando años para esto. El barrio se ve mucho mejor ahora. Estamos pidiendo fondos para reparar y restaurar la muralla de seguridad y las puertas de nuestra institución. Si usted o su iglesia nos puede ayudar con este proyecto sería una bendición y un buen testimonio a nuestra área.
Futura iglesia: Hemos comprado una parcela de tierra para una futura iglesia dos horas al norte de nosotros en una nueva zona de urbanización donde no hay iglesias bautistas. Se encuentra en una zona que tendrá mucho crecimiento debido a un nuevo puerto que se construirá. El lote para la iglesia costó alrededor de $8900 (como $2 por metro cuadrado). El valor de esta tierra ya ha subido. ¿Podrían orar sobre ayudar con este costo? Estamos planeando recaudar fondos adicionales para preparar la tierra y construir una estructura sencilla donde podamos realizar servicios una vez que comencemos el proceso de evangelización en la zona.
Por favor continúen orando por nosotros y nuestro ministerio a los sordos y oyentes. Dios está usando Efata de una gran manera aquí en Perú y más allá.
Trabajo policial: Por favor continúen orando por este ministerio que queremos desarrollar. Cada vez que creo que estamos logrando avances, parece que las cosas se mueven a un ritmo de caracol. Tuve una reunión con un coronel que actualmente supervisa el Departamento de Bienestar de la policía nacional, la cual supervisa la capellanía. Realmente le gustaban mis propuestas para un cuerpo voluntario de capellanes para aumentar a los capellanes católicos oficiales. Él está trabajando para conseguir otra reunión para mí con el Director de la Policía Nacional. Les mantendré informados.
Noticias de la familia
Judson está en su entrenamiento básico en Parris Island para los marines. Por favor oren por él, ya que es difícil, pero está decidido a convertirse en un marine. Se graduará el 28 de abril. Lisa y yo iremos a la graduación. Jared entrará en la Fuerza Aérea el 11 de abril. Ambos lograron puntuaciones ASVAB muy altas y pudieron obtener buenos trabajos en el servicio. Oren por ellos mientras se embarcan en este nuevo capítulo de sus vidas, que Dios los use también en Su servicio.
Nuestros cinco hijos más pequeños están bien y están de vuelta a la rutina del colegio. Ambos Joy y John se acercaron en la conferencia para dedicar sus vidas al Señor. Qué bendición era eso.
¡Felicidades a mi esposa Lisa, quien acaba de cumplir 50 años este mes! Agradezco mucho a Dios por ella y por su amor. No estaría aquí hoy sin ella.

As we serve together here in Peru as your faithful partners in the Lord, we endeavor to stay busy about the Master’s business because as the verse above states the days are evil. This summer has been no exception with many opportunities and needs.
Ministry News
Camps and Conferences: This summer has been filled with activities and excitement. In January, I had the opportunity to preach at family camp in Trujillo. That was a blessing as campers responded to the preaching and teaching and many decisions were made. In addition, the last week of January and the first week of February we held our own camps (first in almost 17 years), one for the deaf and one for the hearing. What a great blessing as we saw deaf and hearing people saved and lives changed during these camps. Folks who came from other churches said it was the best camp they have attended and are looking forward with anticipation to next year’s camps.
Last week we also held our Fires of Evangelism conference. This year it was held at the Baptist Bible College here in the north of Lima about two hours from Efata. What a great blessing that was, as over 40 pastors came to the workshops and over 400 people attended each night. During the final evening invitation, over 40 young people and adults came forward and publicly dedicated their lives to the Lord.
Please pray as we are planning for the 40th anniversary for Efata, May 17-21, that it will be a great encouragement to our church and that we’ll see many saved.
Salvations & Baptisms: Many people have been saved during these past months. This past Sunday we baptized several people from Efata and our mission church in Tablada. One was the older brother of two of our pastors on our staff. He was the last of his siblings to be saved and baptized. They were so excited and it was wonderful to see all the brothers and sisters come to attend the baptism. It was great to see this group of new converts and other Christians respond to the Lord’s command for baptism.
Home Ministry: We continue to receive a steady stream of babies and children who pass through Efata on their way to their orphanages. We have helped as a transitory home for these children who are abandoned or taken from abusive situations. Most are babies or young children but we occasionally get a child who is older, of whom many have been saved through this ministry. One such child was an eleven-year-old girl who recently came and stayed with us for just one night. We may never see her again on this side of Heaven but we will see her there!
Infrastructure: Recently the city paved our streets and put in sidewalks. We have been waiting years for this. The neighborhood looks a great deal better now. We are praying for funds to repair and restore our complex security wall and doors. If you or your church can help us with that project it would be a blessing and good testimony to our area.
Future church plant: We have purchased a plot of land for a future church plant two hours north of us in a new urbanization area where there are no Baptist churches. It is in an area that is slated for much growth because of a new super port for shipping that is going to be built. The plot for the church cost about $8900 (about $2 a square meter). The value of this land has already gone up. Would you please pray about helping with this cost? We are planning to raise additional funds to prepare the land and build a simple structure where we can hold services once we begin the evangelization process in the area.
Please continue to pray for us and our ministry to the Deaf and hearing. God is using Efata in a great way here in Peru and beyond.
Police Work: Please continue to pray for this area of ministry that we are trying to develop. Every time I believe we are making advances, it seems things grind to a snail’s pace. I had a meeting with a key Colonel who currently oversees the Department of Wellbeing for the national police which oversees the Chaplaincy. He really liked my proposals for a volunteer chaplaincy corps to augment the official Catholic chaplains. He is working on getting another meeting for me with the Director of the National Police. I will keep you advised.
Family News
Judson is in boot camp at Parris Island for the Marines. Please pray for him as it is tough going but he is determined to become a Marine. He will graduate April 28th. Lisa and I will be going to the graduation. Jared will be going into the Air Force on April 11th. Both had very high ASVAB scores and were able to get great jobs in the service. Pray for them as they embark on this new chapter of their lives and that God will use them in His service as well.
Our five youngest children are doing well and are back into the school routine. Joy and John both went forward in the conference to dedicate their lives to the Lord. What a blessing that was.
Congratulations to my wife Lisa, who turned 50 this month! I thank God for her and for her love. I wouldn’t be here today without her.

Noticias del Ministerio
Hemos pasado algunos meses increíbles en Efata. Como dice el versículo, Dios es soberano. ¡Siempre está en control, siempre a tiempo y siempre enterado!
Este año hemos visto a Dios obrar de manera maravillosa. Como la mayoría de ustedes saben, luchamos por casi un año para sacar un contenedor de aduanas. Cuando lo logramos, el costo de almacenamiento fue mucho más de lo que podríamos pagar. Sin embargo, Dios movió el corazón del responsable y recibimos un descuento del 90%, y para colmo, también obró en los corazones de iglesias e individuos para ayudar con los costos que quedaron.
Por otro lado, he estado trabajando mucho para tener acceso a la Policía Nacional del Perú para enseñar valores y ética bíblica en sus escuelas. Dios me concedió una oportunidad para conversar con el Director de la Policía Nacional con este propósito. Además, me he reunido con el Director de Educación de la policía con respecto a la enseñanza de la lengua de señas, y me reuniré nuevamente con él para implementar el curso de valores para próximo año.
En noviembre disfrutamos de dos de las mejores conferencias bíblicas que hayamos tenido en Efata. Pastor Wayne Van Gelderen y su hijo Pastor Daniel vinieron y predicaron y enseñaron para la conferencia de oyentes, y dos semanas más tarde, los misioneros Ray Bradley de Ecuador y Lee Johnson de aquí en Perú hicieron un trabajo maravilloso en nuestra conferencia de Sordos. Muchas decisiones se tomaron en ambas conferencias con salvaciones, bautismos y crecimiento espiritual.
Hace poco, una organización llamada Deaf N.O.W. vino para una campaña médica y dental donde atendieron a toda nuestra escuela y nuestro personal y a muchos en la comunidad. Fueron de gran bendición. Queremos trabajar con ellos en el futuro en áreas sociales tanto en la comunidad Sorda como en Audífonos, proporcionándonos más oportunidades de evangelización.
Seguimos sirviendo como un hogar de corto plazo para niños en tránsito del gobierno. Hemos visto a varios niños salvados a través de este ministerio y hemos cuidado a decenas de bebés y niños este año. Estamos agradecidos por este ministerio único. Seguimos practicando la “religión pura” de Santiago 1:27.
Nuestras misiones en Callao, El Augustino y Tablada van muy bien. Dios está bendiciendo con salvaciones, bautismos y crecimiento espiritual (Tanto en Sordos como en oyentes). Nuestro misionero que enviamos este año a Cajamarca también está viendo un crecimiento constante.
Noticias de la Familia
Judson está de camino a unirse al Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos. Él ha tomado su juramento de entrada retrasada y espera su fecha de salida el 6 de febrero. Está viviendo en los Estados Unidos con amigos de la familia de nuestra iglesia y trabajando a tiempo parcial con su cuñado mientras que se pone físicamente en forma para el entrenamiento básico. Realmente lo extrañamos por aquí. Afortunadamente, le encontramos un boleto para venir a visitarnos para su cumpleaños y Navidad antes de su internamiento.
Jared planea entrar en la Fuerza Aérea, y también vendrá de visita. Será genial tenerlo aquí después de más de dos años. Lamentablemente, James no podrá venir este año. Él estuvo aquí en noviembre con Pastor Van Gelderen para ayudar con la interpretación. Disfrutamos de una visita sorpresa de Julianne y su familia en octubre.
Ahora todos nuestros niños que están en casa – Joy, John, Joel, Jessica y Jennifer – nacieron aquí en el Perú, haciéndolos ciudadanos duales. Cuando llegamos al Perú hace diecisiete años, tuvimos cinco hijos. Ahora tenemos otra vez solo cinco niños con nosotros. Debo decir que es interesante. La mesa de desayuno de la mañana no es tan llena como solía ser.
Una gran bendición que Lisa y recibimos este mes es que por fin pudimos cambiar nuestra calidad migratoria de “Religioso No Católico” a “Inmigrante”. Esto significa que las restricciones de viaje que nos han impedido tener una salida de un año completo durante los últimos años ya no se aplican. No hemos visto una salida de año completo desde 2004. Debido a nuestros compromisos para el próximo año, no podremos programar una salida hasta por lo menos agosto, así que por favor tengan paciencia con nosotros; Esperamos verlos a todos, si Dios quiere, en la última parte de 2017 y en 2018.
Queremos agradecer humildemente a todos los que nos apoyan por su fidelidad con nosotros. Este mes cumplimos 17 años aquí en Perú y más de 18 años como misioneros. No puedo creer lo rápido que ha pasado el tiempo.
Tenemos algunas peticiones de oración muy especiales dirigidas hacia 2017.
- Debido a la modernización y la contabilidad fiscal en el municipio local, vimos un salto en nuestros tributos este año de como $3.00 a $ 8,000.00 al año. Nuestro apoyo ha disminuido a lo largo de los años, y estamos sufriendo económicamente. Por favor, oren con nosotros acerca de nuestras obligaciones financieras para este ministerio, para que Dios pueda proveer más fondos para las operaciones diarias de Efata. Estamos luchando por exonerar algunos de estos impuestos. Aún debemos pagar por el año pasado; oren por una provisión especial para eso. El costo de la vida diaria también ha subido, así que nuestro presupuesto es algo milagroso cada mes.
- Por favor continúen orando por el trabajo con la Policía Nacional. Dios está abriendo puertas, y estamos entusiasmados con estas oportunidades. He presentado una propuesta para un plan nacional de capellanía. Bajo la ley actual, sólo los sacerdotes católicos pueden ser capellanes. Estoy trabajando para cambiar esto.
- Tenemos una gran necesidad de maestros misioneros solteros (mujeres u hombres) para ayudarnos en nuestra escuela para nuestros estudiantes de habla inglesa, así como en nuestras clases de sordos. Por favor ora por esta necesidad. Si conoce a una señorita o un hombre a quien le gustaría ayudar en el campo misionero como maestro durante un año o más, póngalos en contacto con nosotros. Una pareja de enseñanza permanente sería maravillosa también.
- Rafael Ramírez, un misionero que formamos y que apoyamos en Venezuela, está plantando iglesias y ministerios de Sordos en todo el país. Actualmente está desarrollando dos ministerios de sordos mientras pastorea una iglesia creciente y planta múltiples misiones, además de enseñar y predicar a elementos policiales y militares en Venezuela. Sin embargo, la crisis económica venezolana es abrumadora, y no puede salir para recaudar el apoyo mensual que tanto necesita. Por favor oren por él, y si alguno de ustedes está buscando un misionero nacional de primera clase que está haciendo el trabajo bajo las circunstancias más difíciles, es Rafael y su familia. Usted puede apoyarlo a través de nuestro ministerio. Por favor ore por esto.

Ministry News
We have just completed some of the most amazing months here at Efata. Like the verse above declares, God is God over everything. He is in control. He is always on time and always “in the loop”!
This year we have seen God move in wonderful ways. As most of you know, we struggled for almost a year to have a container of donations released. When that finally happened, the cost of storage was way beyond our ability to pay. However, God moved the heart of the responsible party and we received a 90% discount, and to top that off, God moved in the hearts of churches and individuals to help with the costs that were left.
On another front, I have been working very hard to gain access to the National Police of Peru to begin working with them to teach Biblical morals and ethics in their schools. God opened a door of opportunity to meet with the Director of the National Police to allow me to do that. In addition, I have met with the Director of Education for the police regarding teaching sign language and will be meeting again with him to implement the morals and ethics course next year.
In November, we had two of the greatest Bible conferences ever. Pastor Wayne Van Gelderen and his son, Pastor Daniel, came and preached and taught for the hearing conference, and then two weeks later, Missionaries Ray Bradley from Ecuador and Lee Johnson from here in Peru did a fabulous job in our Deaf Conference. Many decisions were made in both conferences with salvations, life-changing decisions and baptisms.
Last week we had an organization called Deaf N.O.W. come and do a medical and Dental campaign where they attended our entire school and staff, as well as many in our community. They were a great blessing, and we are looking forward to partnering with them in the future for help in social areas in both the Deaf and Hearing communities, thus providing us more avenues for outreach.
We continue to act as a short-term foster facility for children in transit from the government. We have seen several children saved through this ministry and we have taken care of dozens of babies and children this year. We are grateful for this unique ministry we have. We continue to practice the “pure religion” of James 1:27.
Our mission works in Callao, El Augustino and Tablada are doing great. God is blessing those ministries with salvations, baptisms and spiritual growth (Both Deaf and Hearing). Our missionary that we sent out this year to Cajamarca is also seeing steady growth.
Family News
Judson is on his way to joining the U.S. Marine Corps. He has taken his Delayed Entry oath and awaits his ship-out date on Feb. 6th. He is living in the States now with family friends from our home church and working part-time with his brother-in-law as he gets physically in shape for boot camp. We really miss him around here. Thankfully, we found him a ticket to come and visit us for his birthday and Christmas before he “ships”.
Jared is planning to go into the Air Force, and will be coming down as well for a visit. It will be great to have him here after more than two years. Unfortunately, James will not be able to come this year. He was just here in November with Pastor Van Gelderen to help with interpreting. We enjoyed a SURPRISE visit from Julianne and her family in October.
Now all our children who are home–Joy, John, Joel, Jessica, and Jennifer–were born here in Peru, making them dual citizens. When we came to Peru seventeen years ago, we had five children. We are back down to five children again. I must say, it is interesting. The morning breakfast table is not as full as it used to be.
One great blessing that Lisa and I have received this month is we finally have been able to change our immigration status from Religious Non-Catholic to Immigrant. This means that the travel restrictions that have prevented us from having a full furlough over the past several years no longer apply. We have not seen a full year furlough since 2004. Due to our full schedule, next year, we will not be able to schedule a furlough until at least August so please be patient with us; we look forward to seeing you all, God willing, the next time we are in country in the latter part of 2017 and into 2018.
We would like to humbly thank all our supporters for your faithfulness to us. This month we completed 17 years here in Peru and over 18 years as missionaries. I cannot believe how fast the time has gone by.
We have some very special prayer requests as we head into 2017.
- Due to modernization and fiscal accountability in the local municipality, we saw a jump in our property taxes on this year’s tax bill from basically $3.00 to $8,000 a year. Our support has steadily declined over the years, and we are truly hurting financially. Please pray with us about our financial obligations for this ministry that God will provide more funding for the daily operations of Efata Ministries. We are fighting for exoneration of some of these taxes. We still must pay for last year’s; pray for special provision for that. Daily living cost have gone up as well, so our operating budget is a purely miraculous endeavor every month.
- Please continue to pray for the work we are doing with the National Police. God is opening doors, and we are excited about these opportunities. I have put forward a proposal for a national chaplaincy plan. Under current law, only Catholics priest can be chaplains. I am working to change this.
- We have a great need of single missionary teachers (women or men) to help us in our school for our English-speaking students as well as in our Deaf classes. Please pray about this need. If you know of a young lady or man who would like to help on the mission field as a teacher for a year or more, please put them in contact with us. A permanent teaching couple would be wonderful as well.
- Rafael Ramirez, a missionary we trained who we currently support in Venezuela, is planting churches and Deaf ministries all over that country. He is currently developing two deaf ministries simultaneously while pastoring a growing and thriving church and planting multiple missions, as well as teaching and preaching to police and military elements in Venezuela. However, the economic crisis there is overwhelming, and he cannot get out to try to raise much-needed monthly support. Please pray for him, and if any of you are looking for a first-class national missionary who is getting the job done under the most difficult of circumstances, it is Rafael and his family. You can support him through our ministry. Please pray about this.

Noticias del ministerio
¡Está aquí! Por fin recibimos el levantamiento para el container, el cual llegó a Efata como a las 12:30am el viernes 23 de septiembre, finalizando un proceso de 10 meses que llevaría páginas en contar. Estamos muy agradecidos al Señor por sus bendiciones. Debo decir que he aprendido un nuevo nivel de paciencia en este proceso.
Una de las muchas bendiciones fue que la empresa de almacén, Fargoline, aunque algunos nos dijeron que no da muchos descuentos, nos concedió un descuento del 90% sobre las tarifas de almacenamiento para el contenedor. Así que lo que habría superado a los $16,000 entre el almacenamiento y otros cargos por servicio, se redujo a un poco más de $4000. ¡Gloria a Dios! Estamos muy agradecidos a ellos y agradecidos al Señor por su trabajo en los corazones. Como dice el versículo mas arriba, Dios inclina el corazón de las autoridades (reyes).
Estamos muy agradecidos a los que dieron para hacer esto posible. Hay iglesias e individuos quienes dieron con gran sacrificio los bienes que llegaron en el container y las ofrendas que permitieron enviar el contenedor y cubrir los gastos relacionados con los procesos de papeleo, almacenamiento y movimiento aquí en Perú. Este ha sido un proceso muy desalentadora y frustrante, pero hemos aprendido mucho.
Nos encanta de que por fin podemos distribuir los folletos y las Biblias a lo largo de nuestros ministerios aquí en Perú. Damos gracias al Señor por bancos y sillas para la iglesia, ropa usada, ropa nueva, uniformes escolares, zapatos, 28 mesas, un equipo especial para un niño con necesidades muy especiales, planchas de cocina eléctrica, cubiertos, toallas, ollas de cocción lenta, sábanas, computadoras para la escuela, enormes cajas de juguetes, además de pequeñas bicicletas y juguetes para montar, útiles escolares, recursos pedagógicas, libros para la biblioteca, un cambiador para la cuna, una mesa de ping-pong, futbolín, y muchos productos deportivos, cuadros y más.
En noviembre vamos a tener dos conferencias Bíblicas, una para oyentes y una para los sordos. Estamos muy animados de tener estas conferencias para nuestra gente de la iglesia.
Por favor oren por mí mientras hago contactos con funcionarios de la Policía Nacional de Perú, abriendo puertas en sus escuelas e instituciones para enseñar la ética bíblica y moral. Es una gran necesidad aquí en Perú. Les informaré más acerca de este proyecto a medida que avanza.

¡Ya somos tres veces abuelos! Julianne dio a luz a un hermoso bebé llamado Andrew, el domingo 25 de septiembre por la noche. Lisa y yo regresamos de un compromiso de la predicación que yo tenía a dos horas de Efata, y cuando llegamos a casa a las 1:30am, recibimos una visita sorpresa de Frank y Julianne y sus dos hijos, David y Andrew. Qué bendición poder cargar a mi nuevo nieto por primera vez.
Judson está por terminar con sus estudios de la secundaria. Yo estaré llevándole de regreso a los Estados Unidos para completar su proceso de alistamiento para los “Marines.” Por favor oren por la dirección de Dios en este proceso para él.
James viene para la conferencia de los oyentes para ayudar con la interpretación. Estamos muy contentos de volver a verlo pronto. Acaba de empezar sus estudios de Maestría en el “Baptist College of Ministry”.
Jared sigue trabajando en Fargo, North Dakota, y asiste a la Iglesia Bautista de Fargo. Es miembro activo de la iglesia y se prepara para entrar en el ejército.
John, Joel, Jessica y Jennifer están bien. Los niños están creciendo. Una vez que sale Judson, sólo tendremos cinco niños en casa. Lisa está cuidado a un bebé recién nacido en situación de abandono, traído a nosotros por el gobierno. Aparte de recibir menos horas de sueño, es bueno tener un bebé en la casa por un tiempo.
